A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is an operation that is designed to reshape the entire abdomen. Unlike liposuction or liposculpture which only works on fat, the modern tummy tuck removes excess skin, fat and tightens any loose musculature. Tightening loose muscles of the tummy is the only way to create a flat tummy and waistline post-pregnancy if the abdominal muscles have separated.
There are essentially two type of tummy tucks. A full tummy tuck involves a full redraping of the abdominal skin as well as tightening of the entire abdominal wall musculature, with the umbilicus (belly-button) being reshaped and moved into a more desirable location. A mini tummy tuck is a smaller procedure which principally concentrates on tightening and reshaping the lower abdomen. Liposuction/liposculpture is an integral part of both types of tummy tuck.
Patient Requirements
renowned Australian-based plastic surgeon, Dr Michael Miroshnik, explains what is involved in a modern tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) procedure.
A full tummy tuck is an operation which is designed to reshape the entire span of the abdomen. Loose skin, fat, scars and stretch marks are removed and the abdominal musculature tightened over the length of the entire abdomen to flatten the contour and reduce any bulges. The umbilicus (belly-button) is also reshaped and repositioned to a more aesthetically desirable location. Dr Miroshnik often combines the procedure with liposuction of the upper abdomen and flanks to yield more dramatic results.
A mini tummy tuck is a smaller operation which is designed to principally reshape the lower abdomen. Loose skin, fat, scars and stretch marks in the region are removed and the lower abdominal wall musculature tightened. Dr Miroshnik often combines the procedure with liposuction to yield more dramatic results. Only a smaller portion of patients are suitable for a mini-tummy tuck, with the majority needing a full (or extended) tummy tuck to achieve their desired goals.
